Behavior Analysts and organizations providing ABA services found on this website are not endorsed by GABA. The only qualification for posting information on this website is to be a current and active member of GABA.  In Georgia, any person can legally call him/herself a “behavior analyst.” As a consequence, individual consumers must evaluate the competency of behavior analysts.

It is recommended that you employ individuals who are certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.  This board maintains certification for ”Board Certified Behavior Analysts” and you can locate those with this credential at the following website  www.bacb.com.  Additionally, you may be able to better select a provider by choosing those that are board certified and active members of GABA.

Ethical Dilemmas

A behavior analyst is working as a consultant in an Autism classroom. There are five students in the classroom, along with a teacher and two paraprofessional instructors. The behavior analyst has conducted functional behavior assessments and skills assessments for all of the students. Further, data collection systems and teaching protocols have been developed for each student. In the middle of the school year, a new student joins the class. The teacher reports to the behavior analyst that the student has the same behaviors as one of the other students. To make things simple, the behavior analyst tells the teacher to use the same behavior intervention plan for the new students as they are using for the other student.

A behavior analyst starts an in-home program with a six-year-old boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, and some hearing loss. The learner is currently non-vocal, and does not have a functional system of communication. Additionally, the learner exhibits a host of interfering behaviors, such as aggression, eloping in public places, and self-injurious behavior in the form of scratching. After receiving the results of the functional behavior assessment and recommended targets, the learner’s mother indicates that she feels it is important for the learner to work on tying his shoes and writing his name. She feels that this should be the primary focus of programming. The behavior analyst agrees to work on handwriting, but in addition to the original recommendations for programming.

The 39th Annual Association for Applied Behavior Analysis International Convention was held on May 24-28, 2013 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The convention was a great opportunity to learn about current research in Applied Behavior Analysis and network with other professionals.
